Wastewater retention pond systems are well known to provide reliable, low cost, and relatively low maintenance treatment for municipal and industrial discharges. These systems are designed to enhance the growth of natural ecosystems that are either anaerobic, aerobic, or facultative, which is a combination of the two.
The biological processes in retention ponds can become overloaded, requiring additional treatment through aeration or other management actions. The biological processes can include bacterial acid formation and methane fermentation. These biochemical reactions are known to produce hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and other odorous compounds.
Retention Ponds will benefit from introducing the action of the WOW Air products including WOW Air B™, WOW Air B28™ and WOW Air S™ to the pond ecosystems as soon as possible, usually at the headworks of the Retention Ponds. This early introduction will activate the capability of these products to prevent the sulfur within the bacteria from forming and releasing the byproducts H2S and mercaptan gases, and replacing these gases with oxygen, thereby freeing up the bacteria to more efficiently break down waste as naturally intended. Once the sulfur molecule is neutralized by the WOW Air products, it cannot reform and generate H2S or mercaptan gases during the completion of the treatment processes.
